Oil Prices Plunge More Than 8% as Traders Bet on Easing Supply Fears

U.S. crude fell 8.3% to $88.12 a barrel and Brent dropped 8.7% to $94.62 on Wednesday, one of the steepest one-day declines in years.

Crude oil prices tumbled on Wednesday in one of the sharpest single-day declines in years, according to CNBC, as traders bet that supply disruptions that pushed prices higher this fall may be easing.

West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, fell 8.3 percent to settle at $88.12 a barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped 8.7 percent to $94.62.

Washington weighs in

Vice President JD Vance addressed energy prices during the day, and his remarks were widely cited by traders as the selloff gathered speed, CNBC reported. Administration officials have said repeatedly that lowering fuel costs is a priority, and markets have been sensitive to any signal about supply, sanctions or diplomacy in producing regions.

What analysts are saying

Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates told CNBC the decline reflected a sudden reassessment of how much supply risk was built into prices. He said prices had climbed on fears of disruption and fell quickly when those fears eased.

Other analysts quoted by CNBC, including Rebecca Babin and Bob McNally, said the market remains volatile. They noted that the same geopolitical risks that drove prices up could return, and that one day of heavy selling does not settle the longer-term picture for supply and demand.

What it means at the pump

Gasoline prices usually follow crude with a lag of days or weeks. If oil holds near current levels, drivers could see lower prices at the pump heading into the holiday travel season, though retail prices depend on refinery output, local taxes and regional supply.

Lower fuel costs also ripple through the economy. Airlines, trucking companies and manufacturers spend heavily on energy, and cheaper oil can ease inflation pressures that have shaped Federal Reserve decisions.

Market reaction

The plunge in oil helped spark a broad stock market rally, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its biggest gain since April 2025. Energy company shares were an exception, falling along with the price of the commodity they sell.

Traders said they would watch weekly government inventory data and any new statements from producing nations for clues about whether the drop will last.
