Broderick Leads DesJarlais by 280 Votes in Tennessee’s 4th District

Democrat Victoria Broderick finished 280 votes ahead of Rep. Scott DesJarlais in final unofficial results; the AP has not called the Tennessee race.

Democrat Victoria Broderick ended election night 280 votes ahead of eight-term Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais in Tennessee’s 4th Congressional District, 95,585 to 95,305, according to final unofficial results reported by the Nashville Banner and WPLN News. The Associated Press had not called the race, and DesJarlais had not conceded as of Wednesday night, WPLN reported.

  • Victoria Broderick (D): 95,585 votes, 48.9%
  • Scott DesJarlais (R): 95,305 votes, 48.7%
  • Jacob Kristopher Anders (I): 2,833 votes, 1.4%
  • Clay Faircloth (I): 1,853 votes, 0.9%

The Courier-Journal’s results page, which uses Reuters data, listed about 99% of the estimated vote counted. The Nashville Banner reported all of the vote counted.

A rematch on a redrawn map

The contest repeated the 2024 race, which DesJarlais won by more than 40 percentage points, according to the Banner. Since then, Tennessee Republicans redrew the state’s congressional map in the middle of the decade. WPLN said the new lines were meant to eliminate the Democratic seat based in Memphis. The 4th District picked up the southeastern corner of Davidson County, part of Nashville, while keeping Murfreesboro and the southern half of the Cumberland Plateau.

Broderick, a 34-year-old tech worker, reported raising less than $100,000 as of Oct. 14, compared with more than $600,000 for DesJarlais, the Banner reported. She campaigned on housing costs, rural hospitals and universal pre-K. DesJarlais, a physician from Sherwood, has held the seat since 2011.

One Democrat in a GOP delegation

If the margin holds, Broderick would be the only Democrat in Tennessee’s House delegation, which Republicans had aimed to make all-GOP.

Developing: The results are unofficial, no major news organization had called the race in the reports reviewed, and DesJarlais had not conceded.
